During the summer of 2005, the Banat University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Timisoara (USAMVBT) celebrated 60 years of existence.
In its development, the university has gone a relatively long way and not always easy, going through many stages of which we remember the most important:
- during the Vienna Dictate period, in Timisoara functioned for 5 years the Faculty of Agronomy from Cluj (which, according to the Education Law of 1938, was subordinated to the Polytechnic School of Timisoara);
- the emergence of the Law on Agrarian Reform no. 187/1945 constituted a normative act of reference, laying the patrimonial bases of the agricultural system in order to be practiced in Romania between 1949-1989;
- July 30, 1945 - the promulgation by King Mihai I of Romania of Law 617 for the establishment of the Faculty of Agronomy within the Polytechnic of Timisoara (Official Gazette, August 1, 1945);
- the 1948 agrarian reform meant, in fact, the Sovietization of Romanian agriculture, which fundamentally altered the objectives of agronomic education;
- Between 1962-1976, the university was led by the rector Prof. dr. Iulian Drãcea and the substantial change of Timisoara agronomic education took place. The campus was conceived as a complex of buildings in order to merge the same ground the learning areas, research laboratories, utilities for microproduction, socially designated areas such as hostels and canteens, sports and leisure grounds, and so on. After its construction, it has become one of the most modern campuses in Europe during that period.
Since December 1989, it has become necessary to change the concept of the place and role of the specialist in the agro-food system and to redefine the labour market of the agricultural specialist.
By Order of the Minister of Education and Science no. 4894 of 22.03.1991, the name of the institution changed into the Banat University of Agricultural Sciences of Timiºoara (USAMVBT), and in 1995 by the Decision of the Government of Romania no.568, at the Banat University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Timiºoara (USAMVBT).
Between 1990 and 2004, the university experienced a strong revival. During this period, most of the learning environments, student studios and cafeteria, which have acquired European standards, have been rearranged and modernized.
The construction of new educational spaces for the Faculty of Food Technology and the Faculty of Agricultural Management was started. In the autumn of 2004, with the opening of the new academic year this new construction was given in paragliding. This construction is currently entirely used.
